The danger of overexploitation of wood

  • 2 min read

Our wood consumption increases every year. We use it to heat us, build buildings, furniture or simply make paper. In 2018, according to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), nearly 4 billion m³ of wood was harvested to meet our global needs. Although wood is an ecological material, its production is not necessarily sustainable.

In fact, today only 12% of the world's forests intended to produce wood are certified. The timber market is tainted by the presence of illegal timber, an industry with major economic challenges. The latter includes any timber exploited, transported or sold in violation of the legislation of the country where the timber was harvested before being put on sale. These illegal timbers create unfair competition by lowering international prices. This irresponsible exploitation of forests also has very serious social and environmental consequences: reduction of biodiversity, erosion, water pollution or disruption of its cycle, or even deforestation. Impacts that are all the more worrying as demand continues to increase. In France, wood offers an ecological alternative to concrete and is, in fact, increasingly popular with architects. It is also used more and more to produce energy and new sectors are developing, such as wood chemistry. Same craze on a global scale.

Valoops is aware of this reality and the problems it creates. This is why our products do not contain any wood fiber and are made in France, from waste. This choice is part of a responsible eco-design approach and it is important for us to act concretely in order to fight against the overexploitation of wood, so instead of reducing our consumption of wood by offering simple composite products we have decided to completely eliminate it from our manufacturing process.
